What channels show College Football Playoff games?
You can watch the 2026–2027 College Football Playoff on ESPN, ABC, TNT, and truTV. ESPN and TNT Sports split the 11 games, so you’ll need access to both broadcasters for complete coverage.
Here’s how the broadcast agreement breaks down:
- ESPN and ABC: Six playoff games, including the national championship. Four of those games will be simulcast on ABC, with one ABC broadcast in each round. You can also stream these games through ESPN Unlimited in the ESPN app.
- TNT and truTV: Five playoff games, including two first-round matchups, two quarterfinals, and an Orange Bowl semifinal. TNT Sports’ playoff coverage will also stream on HBO Max.

When is the 2026–2027 College Football Playoff?
The 2026–2027 CFP kicks off on Friday, December 18, with four first-round matchups spread across two days. The quarterfinals follow on December 30 and January 1, with the semifinals scheduled for January 14–15. The season wraps up on Monday, January 25, with the College Football Playoff National Championship at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
We already know the kickoff times and TV channels for every game, even though the participating schools haven’t been announced. The CFP Selection Committee will reveal the bracket on Sunday, December 6, during a three-hour ESPN broadcast beginning at noon ET.

How does the College Football Playoff format work?
There’s been plenty of speculation about expanding the playoff again, but the folks in charge have kept the 12-team format in place for now. The selection rules have a few wrinkles, though, and it wouldn’t be college football without some confusing postseason rules.
Here’s how the current format works.
Automatic bids and first-round byes
Five teams receive automatic bids to the College Football Playoff. The ACC, Big 12, Big Ten, and SEC champions each earn a spot, regardless of their final ranking. The fifth bid goes to the highest-ranked team from the American, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West, Pac-12, or Sun Belt, even if that team didn’t win its conference.
Notre Dame also earns an automatic bid if it finishes in the top 12 of the final CFP rankings. The remaining six or seven spots go to the highest-ranked teams that haven’t already qualified.
The four highest-ranked teams receive first-round byes. Winning a conference championship doesn’t automatically guarantee a bye.
First-round games
Schools with the No. 5 through No. 8 seeds host first-round games against seeds No. 12 through No. 9, respectively. Home-field advantage can be a massive boon for teams that just missed out on a first-round bye.
The winners advance to the quarterfinals, where they’ll face the four teams that received byes.
Quarterfinals and semifinals
As in past years, the CFP rotates the quarterfinal and semifinal games among six historic bowl sites: the Cotton, Fiesta, Orange, Peach, Rose, and Sugar Bowls.
Bowl assignments change each season, but the bracket stays fixed after Selection Day. That means teams aren’t reseeded between rounds, regardless of which schools advance.
